FRIDAY PUZZLE — Welcome to another First Pass Friday, where I pull back the curtain on my brain. The point of this feature is to show you that I may not be Ms. Smarty-pants McKnow-It-All, yet with enough heart, spleen or whatever internal organs are needed to prove how much grit I have, I can successfully pull Timmy out of the quicksand and drag him to safety.

I’m sorry, that’s Lassie. What I meant to say was, if I can break into a tough Friday puzzle, you can, too. Our methods may not be the same, but our goals are: We want to conquer one of the hardest New York Times Crosswords of the week. So I’m going to tell you how I got started, in the hope that it will also help you get started.

An interesting design by Ryan McCarty, with what felt to me like four distinct sections and a staggered stack in the middle.

This was an interesting solve for me, in that I solved the top two corners of the puzzle before I worked my way into the middle. Typically, my solving flows from one section to another, and I anticipated dropping into the middle after I got some of the northwest. Your mileage may vary.

I couldn’t get anything more from the northwest at this point, but the cross-referenced clues at 6- and 7D helped me out. I knew the answer was WEE/LADS, and from there I got LIKE SO, because I’ve been doing this for a while and am used to seeing the phrase in puzzles. Maybe you got 14A’s RAN AMOK first. That’s fine. You do you.

I did not know the name of the brightly colored fish at 19A (OPAH), but I got it because the crossings were relatively gentle. In order of solving I got EMOPOP first, then KAPOW, O.K. THEN and finally SO RARE.

You may be wondering why I threw -CRED in at the end of 29A. The clue is “Bona fides from fellow cool people,” so I figured that the entry had something to do with street CRED. I was a bit off in terms of genre: The answer is HIPSTER CRED.

Sometimes the universe smiles upon you, and you get a few of those long entries that help you branch out in the grid. That was the case with BETA RELEASE and TRIAL JUDGES (Thank you, Mortimer SNERD, who was before my time but I knew about him because I like to read about the history of radio and television).

And soon you’ll be ready for Saturday.

Excited to have my 10th New York Times puzzle published today! I reused this elegant grid pattern from a Patrick Berry puzzle I loved from 2016. Starting out as a constructor several years ago, I took a lot of my inspiration from wide open grids like this, and would attempt to fill some of them myself as practice. Not all of my attempts turned out well, but some (like this one) I liked enough to submit.

My goal for making the puzzle was to get six lively and varied answers in the intersecting staggered stacks in the middle. Overall — and after a lot of iteration — I’m pretty satisfied with the end result, KNEECAPPING’s general unpleasantness notwithstanding. Other than those center stacks, it was fun to get a food stack in the southwest with SNOW CONE, NEST EGG, and OREO O’S, and I was also happy to use IRRUPT, which is such a cool little word that needs more love.

  Hope you enjoy!

Almost finished solving but need a bit more help? We’ve got you covered.

Warning: There be spoilers ahead, but subscribers can take a peek at the answer key.
