PARIS — Imagine practicing with Roger Federer at the French Open and not even remembering it. That is the case for Christian Ruud, the father and coach of Casper Ruud, Federer’s opponent in the third round at Roland Garros on Friday.

The elder Ruud, a Norwegian who was ranked No. 39 in 1995, does recall hitting with a teenage Federer at an exhibition tournament in Houston in the 1990s. But it was not until Ruud’s old fitness coach texted him on Thursday morning that Ruud was made aware that he (probably) had practiced with Federer at the French Open in 1999.

“I don’t remember the one here,” Ruud said. “Maybe he was right. Or maybe he was dreaming about it.”

But what is set to happen on Friday is no apparition. Casper grew up idolizing Federer and Rafael Nadal, and now will play Federer on Suzanne Lenglen Court in the match of his life. He earned his first foray into the third round of a major tournament by beating Ernests Gulbis and Matteo Berrettini without dropping a set.

Casper Ruud said he had long known that his father had practiced with Federer. But that mythical training session will soon be bumped off the family mantel.

“I will be the first Ruud to say that I was able to play him, so that’s a bit funny,” Casper Ruud said. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve been watching Roger on TV.”

Of course, it is Federer’s remarkable longevity that has provided him the opportunity to hit balls across a net to two generations of Ruuds. At 37, Federer is closer in age to 46-year-old Christian Ruud than he is to Casper, who turned 20 in December.

Even if Christian Ruud could not recall that practice session 20 years ago, Federer seemed to. At least he had a better scouting report on the father than he does on the son.

“I know probably more about his dad than about him, even though I never played him, the father,” Federer said, adding: “I haven’t seen him play a whole lot. But for any 20-year-old to be on the big stage, playing a top guy on a center court, that’s what you dream of. At least I did.”

Christian Ruud said that for his son to win, he could not be intimidated by one of his idols. Casper Ruud, like his father, excels on clay, and Christian said his son needed to leverage his powerful forehand and dictate points as much as possible, and perhaps even serve better than he usually did, or it could be a short match.

Casper Ruud is ranked No. 63, but his father said he thought his son would soon overtake him to become Norway’s highest-ranked player ever.

“He is on a good path to do it, and he is a lot further ahead than me when I was 20,” Christian Ruud said. “I was ranked 150 or 200.”

Few outsiders have seen Federer’s development as up close as Christian Ruud has. But he saw a very different Federer that day in Houston, the encounter he does remember. Federer was gaining attention as one of the top juniors, but he needed to fill in some of the blanks in his game.

“I saw that he was really talented,” Ruud said. “I didn’t think that he was lazy, but I could see he didn’t want to move too much.”

Soon after that, Ruud said, Federer began extensive training, specifically to get his feet moving. He is considered one of the fittest players on tour.

Federer turned professional in 1998, about five months before Casper Ruud was born. Twenty years later, it is Casper’s turn to make a memory, and Federer can relate to the feeling.

“For me, it was special playing Sampras when I was 20,” said Federer, who has returned to Roland Garros after a three-year absence. “I played Pete at Wimbledon. You have to take it all in, enjoy the moment. But you have to believe that you have a chance. If you get to a third round of a Slam, it’s not by luck.”
